Project activities
Breeding
Through traditional and novel genetic approaches develop (or at least have advanced pre-commercial / field trials underway) a tropical medium grain ‘Reiziq type’ for the MD. Standardisation of quality laboratories will concurrently occur to ensure the quality requirements of the specific (SunRice supplied) markets are met and alignment exists with the commercial scale out partner (Lap Vo Mill).

Seed Production and Distribution
Development of a robust seed production and distribution system ensuring variety stewardship and pure seed production, with core practices and record keeping as per scale out partner (Lap Vo Mill) requirements.

Multi-environment Trials
Multi-environment trials (METs) in four (4) provinces (AG,DT,KG and CT) will be conducted for 3 years (year 2-4) in 2 seasons/year; for evaluating advanced lines (including already available and newly selected advanced lines). The outcome will be helpful for further varietal registration and production.

Agronomic Practices to Improve Resource Use Efficiency with Japonica Varieties
To optimise yield and quality we will identify best bet agronomic practices in relation to fertiliser strategy; irrigation strategy; integrated pest management; direct seeding methods; and explore through demonstrations the use of drone technology (service provider) for spray application.

Establish Optimum Harvest and Post-harvest Processes
Establish a ‘Centre for Excellence in Milling, Postharvest Drying and Quality Analysis’. This centre will be supported by AGU staff for the duration of the project (concurrently building capacity to test rice quality for aspects including; colour, milling degree, whole grain, variety mix and width/length ratio).

Social and Extension activities
Sunrice’s approach of direct engagement with farmers involves offering smallholder growers contracts (either directly or through co-operatives or collaborative farmer groups) to deliver rice to a specification that is suited to the quality requirements of the SunRice customer and extending the knowledge of how to achieve these requirements whether this be through the growing season or post-harvest.

Integrated Value Chain Analysis
This project will adopt a well-established value chain analysis framework (Kaplinsky and Morris, 2000; Gereffi et al., 2005; Van den Berg, 2008; Collins et al., 2015) to enable the assessment of a whole-of-chain performance, governance issues and upgrading or intervention options. The analysis will be integrated with a systems thinking approach, to enable the quantitative assessment of underlying issues affecting the production, processing and marketing subsystems.

Australian Breeding and Agronomy Activities
Three Australian components will address and deliver outputs targeting the tropical long grain for the emerging northern Australian rice production environment and tropical environments in general. The first will be the development of a proof of concept for genomic selection and the utilisation of MAS for pre-breeding of tropically adapted rice.
